'Doing Amitabh's make-up in Paa was a nightmare'

After making Cheeni Kum with Amitabh Bachchan, director R Balakrishnan aka Balki has decided to explore a completely different genre. His new film Paa will not see the Big B but rather, will see a 'Small' B. Amitabh plays a 13-year-old child suffering from the rare medical condition Progeria, where the victim ages rapidly.

Paa will see a reversal of roles as Abhishek plays Amitabh's father. Vidya Balan plays his mother.

Balki tells Patcy N how he made Paa possible.

What made you decide to make a film on Progeria?

I did not think of making a film on Progeria at all. I wanted to make a film where Amitabh would play Abhishek's son. I discovered Progeria along the way.

Why did you want Amitabh to play Abhishek's son?

I had gone to Amitji's office once and saw him talking to Abhishek. Abhishek was talking very wisely and Amitji was playing the fool. That made me think how a role reversal would look if Abhishek played Amitji's father.

I thought of making a fantasy film with this idea. But I also wondered if I could make a real story, if there was any medical condition that would help this story. I spoke to doctors and learnt about Progeria. Quite a few movies have been made on this so I did not want to make another one on it. Instead, I wanted to concentrate on the father-son relationship.

Did you find anyone with this condition?

I called a friend whose son had some hormonal imbalance problem. He put me through to a pediatrician, who told me that only 30 Progeria cases have been registered in the world. There is no treatment for this. I did not want to meet any cases personally because it would intrude into their privacy. The film talks about this intrusion of privacy too.

Paa, on the cover of a magazine

Seems like Amitabh Bachchan's gangly dance in his just released movie Paa is fast catching on.

The actor and his son Abhishek, who also stars in the movie, made the cover of Hi Blitz magazine, which they unveiled on Monday in Mumbai.

Directed by R Balki, the film relates the story of a 13-year-old boy played by Amitabh, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder progeria that causes a person to age faster than normal.

The B-Day: Amitabh turns 67...

It's not any more an exaggeration to say that Amitabh Bachchan has become part of Hindi vocabulary; the 'word' stands for Endurance and Unmatched Charisma!

It was on February 15, 1969, that "a tall, lean guy with intense eyes" walked the stairs of KA Abbas's office to sign his first movie, 'Saath Hindustani'.

"Forty years! Been a while. Struggles and uncertainties, successes and disappointments, accusations and controversies, ill health and months in hospital, all such a vivid kaleidoscope of moments, events, images simply unbelievable and unimaginable," blogs Amitabh. How true! Amitabh Bachchan's life has had the quality of being, at once, a biography and a fairytale!

Here are a few snaps and rare facts from the glorious career of the megastar who, at 67, still remains the tallest peak in Bollywood!

Big B all Set to Make Hay

He may be a 60 plus gentleman but Amitabh Bachchan has always managed to stay true to the times. One of reasons behind his longevity has perhaps been his ability to read the times and adapt himself accordingly. Look at the manner in which the actor has taken to blogging.
Bachchan was probably one of the first filmstars to take to blogging. While other filmstars have merely flirted with it, with Big B it seems to be a long term affair. He has managed to keep at it everyday and has had something to say on everything, including swine flu. But of course, the actor has always been very savvy where making money is concerned. Now it seems that the actor's blog postings will soon be converted into a book. Of course, the modest Mr Bachchan, who has always considered his fans to be a part of his extended family, has insisted that if that be the case, he would also like some of the responses of his fans to be included in the book.

Amitabh Bachchan reprises his NAMAK HALAAL look

While Amitabh Bachchan's celebrated look in the classic 'Pag Ghunghroo' from the film NAMAK HALAAL is still fresh in our minds, the actor will be seen once again in a similar avatar in Eros International's ALADIN.
Mr. Bachchan will be seen grooving to a peppy number called 'O Re Sawariya' in the celebrated White kurta and Pink Pagadi which he once donned in the film NAMAK HALAAL.

In this sequence, Jacqueline (Jasmine) is trying to woo Riteish (Aladin) while Amitabh Bachchan (Genius) keeps popping into the scene at various points.

Says Director Sujoy Ghosh, ''We had no intentions of repeating his look from NAMAK HALAAL. It is purely a coincidence but it definitely shows how the actor has impacted our minds over the years through his cult performances.''

Talking about the song, Sujoy adds, '''O Re Sawariya' is a fun filled number and Mr. Bachchan has added an extra charm to it with his unique style and unbeatable energy. We had a great time filming this song and I am sure audiences will love it too''.

The song is picturised on Mr. Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandes and choreographed by Bosco Ceaser and Saroj Khan. The soundtrack is by duo Vishal-Shekhar. The costumes for the film are designed by Narendra Kumar.

Packed with fun, music, masti, action and adventure ALADIN boasts of a visual scale never seen before on Indian screen.

Starring Amitabh Bachchan as Genius - The Genie, Ritiesh Deshmukh as Aladin and Sanjay Dutt as 'Ringmaster', ALADIN also marks the debut of Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandes who is paired opposite Ritiesh. ALADIN, produced by Eros International and Boundscript (Sujoy Ghosh) is a contemporary look at the classic fairy tale.

ALADIN is arriving at theatres this Diwali.
