Pyaar Impossible: Movie Review

In the film, Uday Chopra devices a computer software on which any operating system is compatible. The script that he writes is as much compatible with any operative feel-good film, frequently coming out from the Yash Raj banner. The geeky loser-in-love act that he attempts is not much different from what SRK did in bade bhaiya Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (though thankfully there isn’t an image change).

Like most romantic comedies, the basic problem with Pyaar Impossible is that in the first ten minutes of the film you can predict the last ten minutes. Seven years since college, nerdy Abhay Sharma (Uday Chopra) is still in fancy-love with the campus beauty Alisha (Priyanka Chopra) whom he never dared to speak with. His software program is plagiarized by Varun (Dino Morea) who is now selling it to a Singapore company.

So Abhay flies all the way to Singapore to get back his pride and program and expectedly there he stumbles upon Alisha who is now a divorcee and has a daughter. She mistakes Abhay for a nanny and hires him to look after her naughty daughter Tania ( Advika Yadav) .

More predictably now Varun attempts to hit on Alisha and Tania turns the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai kid with her attempts to hook up her mother with Abhay. And before Abhay can make his confession to Alisha, he is exposed of his nanny trap. Suddenly the frothiness of the casual conversations is replaced by routine melodramatic lines like ‘ Maine tum par trust kiya tha Abhay. Ab samjhane ke liye kuch bacha bhi hai? ’ and you understand where the film is heading. Finally Alisha runs back to Abhay on comprehending the truth from Tania’s annual day act, making it all seem like a child’s play.

Uday Chopra’s screenplay is as much conservative as the convenience with which he makes a geek of himself through a bespectacled look. He also makes a chocolate-boy of himself (literally) in a vivacious scene where he, as the nanny, serves Thai food to some guests while hiding his face from Varun. Director Jugal Hansraj imparts a light-hearted feel to the romance, building conversational chemistry between the couple and thankfully giving no background accounts to justify Alisha’s broken marriage.

But after a swift first half, both the pacing and proceedings drop in the second. Salim-Sulaiman’s rocking musical score adds vigour and value to the film. Manish Malhotra deserves special mention for styling Priyanka Chopra as a smooth-textured eye-candy and sensuously desirable. Cinematographer Santosh Thundiyil doesn’t get much scope to capture Singapore with a breezy charm.

Apart from appearing gorgeous, Priyanka Chopra comes up with a natural performance. Uday Chopra’s acting isn’t as disappointing as his writing. Even Dino Morea is decent. Child actress Advika Yadav is rehearsed but still cute.

The moral of the film is that one shouldn’t judge a person by their looks. Going by that, however cool this candyfloss flick might appear, it’s still shallow on content. Pyaar Impossible might have certainly not aimed for a ‘10 on 10’. But is it really impossible to even strike an average?

Yes, Pyaar Impossible is exactly a film like that.

Mushy on the surface but too cordial to tackle the delicate imbalance of its subject -- beautiful girl+ geeky boy=not the ideal recipe for romance or the heartbreakingly exaggerated concept of Prince Charming.

Beauty is subjective, after all. Even the most gorgeous woman is deemed as plastic by some whilst an ordinary face is perceived as exotic. And wearing glasses does not make one a geek or more importantly, ugly. It's an obsolete stereotype, employed timelessly by cinema, which needs to die. It's long-due, seriously.

That out of the way, Pyaar Impossible isn't the kind of sensitive, layered romance between two unlikely individuals to summon such thoughts. It's, in fact, too harmlessly hollow to even think of going in this direction.

Rather it features an experiment wherein Priyanka Chopra's [ Images ] otherwise uber cool Alisha is forced to dress up in a dowdy jersey and cargo shorts, scruffy hair and needless to say a pair of thick glasses -- the kind Johnny Depp [ Images ] wears to look reflective (or maybe he's genuinely too worn out to wear contacts) and fish for a guy's number in Singapore's bustling Clarke Quay.

Though I personally felt she looked great even then, director Jugal Hansraj and writer Uday Chopra [ Images ] refuse to shoot down this hackneyed conditioning -- guys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses.

In Yashraj's -- click here to become a fan -- latest rom-com, everyone's affluent and sticks to a common vocabulary of Shut up, really?' 'Yeah, whatevers,' 'Like, you know? and 'Wow, sweet' as if they were in a Lindsay Lohan [ Images ] high school movie. In the beginning, it's pretty much all that.

Chopra plays Abhay -- the eternal loverboy harbouring secret feelings for the hottest girl in college, Alisha, even seven years after graduation. He's the perpetual good kid who calls daddy (Anupam Kher [ Images ] in the friendly father mold seldom goes wrong, does he?) for advice and goes out of his way to help.

And so, although he's flown from Mumbai [ Images ] to Singapore in search of a fraud (Dino Morea [ Images ] plays a suave fiend in well-tailored suits) who stole his software program, he ends up playing nanny to Alisha's precocious imp of a daughter, Tanya.

At some point you expect things to get a bit grown-up and complicated but they don't. Uday sticks to the format doing a selfless Surinder Sahni stripped off his gullible simplicity and earthy sentimentality. While he's not bad, his earnest smiles appear too laboured for us to give a damn about his underdog's cause or take Priyanka's helpless cries, 'I am divorced, single mother' too seriously especially when the latter, essaying a Public Relations head of a giant software corporation, dresses like a foxy catalogue model. No one wears beachwear to work. Not even in Singapore. Perhaps a Thai tradition? (Watch the movie, you'll know what I mean.)

Does that mean I recommend Pyaar Impossible? Well, like I said it's harmless. You gain nothing. You lose nothing. It's the kind of film, which could get over in five minutes if only Chopra 1 would let Chopra 2 finish his sentence. But no, Chopra 2 takes two and a half good hours to spill the beans leaving you with little besides a super hot Chopra 1 to admire.

Flashing those never-ending gams and a saucy attitude to stylish effect, the sassy actress, captured stunningly in Santosh Thundiyil's lenses, works up a chummy chemistry with her cheerful co-star and plays the modern, yummy mom with spirit, despite her vaguely-sketched character that contradicts between an airhead and realist.

Let down once again by a script that doesn't live up to her potential, Priyanka, to her credit, overcomes the dull spaces and predictable moments with her vibrant presence and coquettish enthusiasm

It's tough to play a simple, beautiful girl: Priyanka Chopra

She is smart, glamorous and one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood, but Priyanka Chopra says it was difficult for her to portray a simple, beautiful girl in forthcoming film 'Pyaar Impossible' and still try to hold the interest of audiences.

"When you do characters like one in 'Aitraaz', 'Fashion' or 'Kaminey', there are certain peripheries. For example, Sweety in 'Kaminey' won't be able to speak English or she won't wear jeans and top. They are also difficult, but the boundaries help. When I am playing a simple beautiful looking girl, how do I get your interest?" Priyanka said.

"Heroines ought to look beautiful, it's their work. We look pretty, we wear great clothes but that's our job. But how do I make you feel for her? That's why these films are more difficult," Priyanka, who has teamed up with Uday Chopra in the film, told us.

Written and produced by Uday, 'Pyaar Impossible' is a romantic tale about a beauty and a geek. Directed by Jugal Hansraj, it shows how fate brings Uday and Priyanka come together and love blooms amidst all odds.

Talking about her character in 'Pyaar Impossible', Priyanka said: "I play Alisha who works in a software company. She has always been a popular girl, fun loving and one who loves life. But at a young age she has to take a lot of responsibilities and she finds it difficult to manage and her life becomes chaotic," said Priyanka.

'Pyaar Impossible' is slated to release Jan 8.

'Pyaar Impossible' music has young, urban appeal

Actor Uday Chopra turns producer with 'Pyaar Impossible', and the film boasts of young contemporary music, perfect for college-goers.

The film that stars Uday and Priyanka Chopra contains five originals and two remixes composed by Salim and Sulaiman Merchant.

The album opens with 'Alisha', crooned by Anushka Manchanda and composer Salim Merchant himself. The free-flowing, catchy track is quite appealing thanks to Anushka's vocals and the general attitude of the song. Salim gives this song an extra edge and makes it an interesting hear.

The song also has a remixed version, which is high on energy and is an electronic spin to the original. It is ideal for the dance floor.

Next in line is the title track 'Pyaar impossible' sung by Vishal Dadlani and Dominique Cerejo. The romantic track is hummable and the unplugged background music makes a good impact.

This song too has a remixed version, which is not too different from the original.

Neha Bhasin and Benny Dayal go behind the mike for 'You and me', a peppy, fun track. The mix of Hindi and English lyrics and heavy influences of pop make it a song just right for youngsters. It is nice but not as appealing as the earlier tracks.

Up next is '10 on 10', a track that has a complete rock feel. It is energetic and high on beats with vocals by Mahua Kamat, Anushka Manchanda and Naresh Kamath. The foot-tapping song doesn't seem interesting initially but it slowly grows on you.

Then there is 'Ek thi ladki', which has been sung by child artist Rishika Sawant. More of a narration than a song, 'Ek ladki thi' is an average number.

On the whole, the album is a good mix of slow and fast-paced songs and goes well with the theme of the film. The soundtrack is urban, young and mainly for the younger generation.
