I don't open my mouth unnecessarily
She may be the new femme fatale on the block, sweet talking her way into two men's heart in her upcoming film 'Ishqiya' but actress Vidya Balan admits that in real life she doesn't open her mouth unnecessarily. 'Ishqiya' is up for release and if promos are any indication, the film is making a statement with its explicit dialogues. (Text courtesy: PTI)
Abhi-Ash back in Filmistan after 11 years
New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan got nostalgic while filming an ad with wife Aishwarya Rai at Filmistan Studios, the same location where they gave their first shot together 11 years ago when they were mere acquaintances.
'It was here on the very same floor 11 years ago that we gave our first ever shot together. The movie was 'Dhai Akshar Prem Ke'. Great memories,' Abhishek posted on his Twitter page.
'Then, I would have never dreamt that the next time we shoot here would be as husband and wife. How time flies, how lives change,' he added.
Produced by actor Dino Morea, the ad film was shot Tuesday by filmmaker Tarun Mansukhani who directed Abhishek in the hit film 'Dostana'.
'Shooting an ad with the Mrs (Aishwarya). My friend Tarun directing. Great to step in front of his camera again. He's great. And we're all set! The wife is looking her usual stunning self, and me....... Well, I'm looking like Shrek's cousin,' he joked.
Rann Review (2010)
If one is looking for any breaking news with 'Rann', then please be warned that there is no such thing happening; there is no new ground that director Ram Gopal Varma treads in this movie. But what works for 'Rann' is its taunt and racy narrative. Varma knows the art of storytelling and he may have seemed to lost it with his last few films, but in 'Rann' he's got back in full form where narration is concerned. But the content is far from new. The film, as one would have already guessed, is all about news, newsmakers and newsmongers and the war about TRPs, which consumes media barons. The film raises the debate again about what is newsworthy and what is not and it is a question which is quite topical to the times that we live in, when just about everything is prefixed as "breaking news."
Varma exposes the politician businessman media nexus which exists today in his movie, which pitches an ethical media baron, Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (Amitabh Bachchan), against his rival channel owner, in the war for authentic news and TRPs. Malik owns a news channel and is an upright media baron who only believes in the truth. But his ethics stand in the way of his channel's survival. It is tottering and his son Jai (Sudeep) will have none of it as news is only business for him.
The biggest rival of their channel, India 24/7' owned by Amrish Kakkar (Mohnish Behl), believes that news can be made entertaining. Even Malik's son in law Naveen (Rajat Kapoor) has no time for Malik's brand of idealism and they join hands with an evil politician, Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal) to win the war of TRPs. Pandey uses the channel to launch a vicious attack on his political rival. The trio cook up news stories and use Malik's clean image to lend it credibility. Their TRPs soar, they manage to bring the government down, and make tons of money in the bargain, as well. The only honest reporter in their midst is Purab Shastri (Riteish Deshmukh), who believes that the media needs to act as a watchdog and is the fourth pillar of democracy.
Learn from Amitabh Bachchan, Shiv Sena tells Shah Rukh Khan
Mumbai, Jan 30(ANI): Shiv Sena chief Bala Sahab Thackeray has asked Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to emulate the iconic actor Amitabh Bachchan, as Khan recently expressed his support to Pakistani cricketers' inclusion in the Indian Premier League's season 3.
Khan owns an IPL (Indian Premier League) franchise team, the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sharing Bal Thackeray's views in appreciation of Bachchan, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said: "Amitabh Bachchan had declined to accept the award of Brisbane University because it was nation's sentiment in the wake of unending violence against Indian students in Australia. People should learn something."
Thackeray's opnion were expressed through an article in his party's mouthpiece "Saamna."
In 2009, Amitabh Bachhan refused to accept an honorary Doctorate being conferred by Queen's Land University of Technology Brisbane as a mark of protest against the attacks on members of the Indian community. (ANI)

An idyllic tale of love and lies
Debutant filmmaker Abhishek Chaubey's Ishqiya, however, is a privileged exception.
Regardless of its colourful language, simmering sexuality, ribald humour and unabashed reverence for the offensive, the drama has enough lyricism, layers and eccentricity to stereotype it as grim or gawky.
Produced, co-written (along with Chaubey and Sabrina Dhawan) and composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, Ishqiya bears his stamp of brains, brilliance and blasphemy but leaves enough space for Chaubey to establish his credibility. And that's not an easy task when your film is set in the same milieu and texture as Bhardwaj's Omkara. But like Chaubey mentions in an interview, the similarities are mostly 'cosmetic.' He's quite right too.
Barring the fact that both films are set in Eastern Uttar Pradesh belt, which obviously reflects in the conversations, mannerisms and clothing, there's no further resemblance. Interestingly, Chaubey's UP is not just a contrived hamlet featuring mooing cows and stray dogs but a self-sufficient town with malls, restaurants and beauty parlours.
Comfortable in its capricious skin, Ishqiya -- a tricky and moody tale of a whimsical trio caught in twisted circumstances -- gets even more complicated owing to the impulsiveness of heart.
The fickle tone is set in the opening sequence itself wherein a couple shares intimate moments of domesticity when their bliss is shattered after a gas cylinder blows off. This then immediately follows with some wonderful on-the-road bonhomie between Naseeruddin Shah [ Images ] and Arshad Warsi, courtesy the supremely infectious Ibn-e-batuta. The drastic change of tracks is conducted with such crispness and panache; it's quite impressive, really.
The afore-mentioned actors play Khalujaan and Babban, small-time crooks on the run after stealing from their gun-toting boss, Mushtaq (Salman Shahid). Things don't work out as planned and they are forced to take refuge at a deceased friend's dilapidated abode in Gorakhpur (striking props and production design by Nitin Chandrakant Desai) run single-handedly by his melancholic widow, Krishna (Vidya Balan [ Images ]).
While Khalujaan is clearly the experienced yet emotional of the lot, Babban, underneath the cocky surface is disarmingly boyish and sensitive. As for Krishna, she's exactly like the tone of this movie -- unpredictable.
Her melodious charms instantly find an aficionado in Khalujaan who reveals his antecedent belonged to the 'Great Gharana of Indore' for his tabla-playing skills whereas the perennially aroused Babban befriends a 'Bees-kam-paanch' adolescent lad (Aalok Kumar) to track down the nearest brothel in town. Eventually, he too starts competing with Khalu for Krishna's hard-to-tell affections.
Just as we get comfortable with the romance, Chaubey throws a new twist our way. Certain developments in the script implore them to kidnap a specific Mr Kakkad as the only resort to wiggle out of the ensuing dilemma. What follows is a wild ride of set-ups, heartbreaks, revelations and a high-five worthy awesome climax.
'No films excited me as Rang De Basanti did'
We loved Siddharth in 2006's Rang De Basanti. But that was the last we saw of the actor in Hindi cinema. Siddharth, who was busy with his Tamil and Telugu movies, makes a comeback to Bollywood with Striker, a gritty tale about a carom player.
Siddharth tells Patcy N that he doesn't feel bad about being left out of 3 Idiots, starring the RDB cast Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R Madhavan, and why he's looking forward to Striker.
After getting an MBA degree, you decided to get into the movies, and assisted Mani Ratnam. Then you turned actor with Shankar's Boys, and did quite a few Tamil and Telugu movies. Why did you jump into so many streams all at once?
I'm very restless -- as a person, as well as creatively. I was jumping around so much because I was looking for good work. In fact, after Rang De Basanti, people were shocked that an actor, who had got a big Bollywood break, did not go all out and push for a Bollywood career.
There were two reasons for that -- I was looking for a good script, as I wanted to do a perfect film and not be a flash in the pan. Secondly, I wanted to concentrate on my Telugu career, which had just taken off in a big way.
In the south, I can commission my own films, as I am involved from the start to the end of the film. But in Mumbai, it took me time to get a film where I could be involved from start to finish.
How many Hindi film offers did you get after RDB?
Many. Producers even told me that I was mad not to take up any. But I did not get any film that excited me as RDB did.
Did you ask Aamir for any sort of help in Bollywood?
Why should I ask him? I have got to this place where I am on my own. With all due respect, I have a box office of over Rs 150 crores in Telugu films without anyone's help. I don't need anyone's help to be a star. I am doing everything my way.
Do you regret missing out any opportunities in Bollywood?
Absolutely not. I had four superhits in Hyderabad in the four years that I wasn't here. There is no film that I think I should be part of, except Striker.

Yoooo hooooo ….. it's a great one for the tabloids!! Reportedly, Fatrina, er sorry, Zarine Khan of 'Veer' will replace …. Katrina Kaif, in the sequel to 'Partner!!' Expectedly, both director David Dhawan and Lady Khan have been making the right evasive sounds and dodging the incendiary issue.
The shirtless Khan has made his fondness known for his lead Khan in no uncertain terms. "He said that I was destiny's child since I was chosen for 'Veer' over so many other girls." gushed an awed Zarine to the media. "I'd heard about Salman being short tempered, but not once did he lose his cool with me! Though I must confess that I was really scared of facing his anger." Guess, Katrina might do the honours now ….

More Khans …. Sighs Padukone
Her debut with Khan ('Om Shanti Om') was a super success.. And she's scored a winner with another Khan (Saif Ali Khan) in the second most successful film of 2009. But Deepika Padukone isn't contended. She's set her sights on two other desirable Khans too. "I'd love to work with Salman Khan …. and Aamir Khan too," sighs Padukone.
Fresh from the heartbreak with Ranbir Kapoor, the actress has thrown herself headlong into her career. Besides, the thumping win and the critical acclaim for her work in 'Love Aaj Kal' has earned DP work of calibre. "I've bagged some super duper assignments," she exults.
High on that list ranks director Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se' with Abhishek Bachchan as co star. Enacting a revolutionary in Gowariker's flick, buzz has it that DP is likely to watch away with all the top acting honours, once again.
Besides, she will also romp around in a bikini with Akshay Kumar in 'Houseful' and pair up with Neil Nitin Mukesh in Pradeep Sarkar's next. And right around the corner is … 'Karthik Calling Karthik' waiting to grace cine screens soon. Guess, it could be Success calling Padukone ….

Farhan Akhtar's first romantic role
Farhan Akhtar's Karthik Calling Karthik tells a unique story, and sees the actor-director share the screen with Deepika Padukone.
The film's promos look good, and Farhan may have yet another winner on his hands when the film releases next month.
He tells Nithya Ramani what to expect from Karthik Calling Karthik, directed by first-timer Vijay Lalwani.
What genre would you say Karthik Calling Karthik belongs to?
Well, it definitely isn't a horror film. It creates some kind of suspense as to who this Karthik is who is making the (telephone) call. That is revealed at some point in the film. That's why it is a thriller.
There is also a beautiful love story between Karthik and Shonali (Deepika Padukone). The crust of the film is that Karthik wants Shonali in his life but he is not confident enough to tell her that. This lack of confidence has made him a miserable and lonely person.
Suddenly, he gets a call, and things start changing for him. Vijay (Lalwani, writer-director) has written some really nice scenes between Deepika and me. Of course, I cannot reveal the twist. You must watch the film.

'Multiplexes are eating away good cinema'
Chandigarh, Jan 24 (IANS) Bollywood producer Pahlaj Nihalani, credited with launching actors like Govinda, Chunky Pandey and Suniel Shetty, says the profit-driven attitude of multiplexes is leading to the downfall of quality cinema.
'Multiplexes are gradually eating away good cinema and new talent. They are charging exorbitant ticket prices and show only those movies that have strong cast. Other movies with fresh and experimental subjects wither away after just one or two shows,' Nihalani told IANS here.
He added: 'The public is getting less and multiplexes are earning more. In fact, this is a big jolt to the entertainment industry and a major reason why most of the movies are not doing well these days. Once a movie reaches the multiplexes, a distributor or producer, who treats a movie like his own baby, has no say.'
Nihalani also demands a ceiling on the ticket prices of multiplexes. 'A middle class person is totally out of reach of a multiplex screen. State governments should come forward and introduce some ceiling price, like, say, multiplexes could not charge more than Rs.100 for a movie ticket,' he said.
'Corruption has also entered at various levels of cinema. Now a good script or subject does not decide the fate of a movie, but it is in the hands of a critic or multiplex owner. One cannot rely on these critics, who give three- or four star-ratings. The sad part is that after reading their analysis, people decide whether to go for a movie or to buy a pirated CD,' stated Nihalani.
Nihalani was here to promote the filmmaking and acting institute, Dream Whistlerz. He is on the board of the institute.
About young talent, Nihalani said: 'Every individual on this earth has a dream, but unfortunately people do not find the right medium or direction to fulfil it. Some lose their way in between and some switch to other careers.
'The entertainment industry has grown very big. Earlier, people moved to Mumbai, but now they do not need to leave their place. Times have changed and so many avenues are available in TV, radio and in different departments of filmmaking at every place.'
Nihalani cautioned the youngsters about unscrupulous people. 'Many people from our film industry have also opened such acting or filmmaking schools, but they don't even teach basics. They are selling false dreams and ruining the future of our children,' he said.
About acting talent in this part of the country, he said: 'The talent that we have in Punjab you will find nowhere else. Superstar Dharmendra's family in Bollywood is one example. Moreover, Punjabi language, music and songs always have a universal appeal and attract others.'
Nihalani, who had made the blockbuster 'Aankhen' with Govinda and Chunkey Pandey, is now planning 'Aankhen-II' with director Anees Bazmee.
The ace producer also expressed his anguish over the big corporate houses and international names venturing into filmmaking.
'I have a strong feeling that genuine single producers will soon make a comeback. One cannot be a master of so many things at the same time, he has to concentrate on only one aspect if he wants to succeed,' said Nihalani.

My National Award made my family emotional: Arjun Rampal
Mumbai, Jan 23 (IANS) Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal, who has been declared the best supporting actor at the 56th National Film Awards for his performance in Abhishek Kapoor's coming-of-age film 'Rock On!!', says that it was a very emotional moment for his family.
'It's a real honour and a wonderful feeling. It's a big one. It's a very emotional moment for everybody in my family. It was same for my friends and whole team of 'Rock On!!' as well,' Rampal told IANS.
Asked about his wife Mehr Jesia's reaction, he said, ' I won't tell you whether she cried or not, but definitely she became very, very emotional.'
The story of 'Rock On!!' is about five band stars as once-aspiring musicians who chucked up their dream of taking their band professional. But a chance reunion ten years later inspires them to consider returning for one last gig.
Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny played the lead roles in the film.
Rampal celebrated the occasion with the team of 'Rock on!!' at his house.
'We are going to party tonight at my house. We are going to start now, as a part of celebration,' said Rampal.
The actor, who has recently opened up a restro-bar named LAP Lounge And Party in Delhi as joint venture with Restaurateur AD Singh, is going to celebrate there too, very soon.
'I am looking forward to celebrate in LAP soon,' said Rampal

One New 'Idiot' ?
It's a waiting game that trailed off on a reverse track. Kangana Ranaut was asked to report early on the sets of director Anand Rai's 'Manu Weds Tanu'. And R Madhavan was asked to report late on sets, since the rivetting Ranaut would require ample time to slap on the greasepaint.
But, guess what, Kangy managed to finish her make up in a jiffy …. and there was no sign of Maddy. The actor showed up….. an hour later, citing traffic hassles even as a hassled Kangy muttered under her celeb breath. Director Rai must have felt like an 'Idiot'!

SRK Smoothens Touchy Ties
He's now turned mediator of sorts. Notch one more high for Shah Rukh Khan. After Hrithik Roshan's b'day bash , the party swerved late into the night at 'Mannat', as well.
SRK had personally invited Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan, Vivek and many others to his residence, when they met up at the Roshan celebration. But tension peaked with Vivek Oberoi sharing the same celeb space as Abhi Ash.
Sensing the squirmy discomfort that was soon to follow, King Khan, playing the suave host bought together the two warring factions, Abhishek and Vivek. And he managed this subtly, forging a polite bond without making his intentions expressly known.
What's next? 'Yuva 2'? Your call, Mani Sir.
Abhishek Bachchan's sweet revenge
Mind you, never ever take his clout lightly. This disclaimer is for Abhishek Bachchan who recently vented his ire on a top billed bollywood actress.
It's an open secret that the chemistry between Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra is getting sour by the day. And the final nail in the coffin was when Abhishek got Priyanka Chopra out of a big film project because she had refused to work in his friend's film citing date issues.
The story goes that Priyanka Chopra refused to work with Rohan Sippy much to the surprise of the filmmaker who had earlier cast her in BLUFFMASTER. Rohan, who is a good friend of Abhishek complained about Priyanka, and Abhi, who already had a few things to settle with Priyanka got her kicked out of the upcoming film THE ITALIAN JOB, in which he plays the lead role.
Though, Priyanka's spokesperson has denied these reports, but looks like Priyanka's fight with Jr. Bachchan is turning to be a costly affair for the actress.
Shahid smooches Anushka thrice
Bollywood Trade News Network
Shahid Kapoor could not have asked for more. The star is having a great time with his upcoming film which is being directed by first time director Parmeet Sethi.
Buzz is that Parmeet is making the best use of the good chemistry between Shahid and Anushka Sharma. For this reason he introduced, not one, two but three smooching scenes in the film. Though, this was good news for Shahid but Anushka surely was on the receiving side of this lip lock. As she had to get into extended lip locking sessions, something she does not really like that much.
With Shahid showing his art with lips, let's hope the hot story is part of the final film too in its unedited version.

Karthik Calling Karthik music is easy on the ears
Sometimes a soundtrack is all about breeziness, and that seems to be the brief for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy as they deliver an album of songs trying really hard to come across as real easy -- listening, that is.
The album kicks off with Hey Ya, a refreshing track by Shankar, Loy and Clinton Cerejo, and it starts by setting up a good, fingersnapping groove. The lyrics are standard hinglish-meets-bad r'n'b pap, but the song works nicely overall. The whoa-ho-ho vocals especially do well, making sure the end result is good, soft fun.
Next up is Uff Teri Ada, featuring Shankar along with Alyssa Mendonsa. The track takes a little while to get going, but Mendonsa's voice is perfectly suited for her rapid opening vocals, after which the dance-floor rhythm kicks in and stays solid. The chorus is punchy enough to keep the track danceable, and Mahadevan vocally provides the odd surprise to keep things interesting.
KK takes on Jaane Ye Kya Hua, a very pleasant harmonica-driven ballad doused in craving. The vocals gel quite strikingly well with Farhan Akhtar during the chorus, and even though KK doesn't quite sound like him, the feel is similar.
Kaisi Hai Ye Udaasi has Kailash Kher and Sukanya Purayastha manning the microphones. The song is mellow yet Kher sings it in his typically intense way, and it's a good thing Purayastha rescues it with a very listenable drawl much more appropriate to the subject.
Then comes Karthik Calling Karthik, the movie's theme song predictably made out of beep-boob keypad tones and assorted phone sounds. The lyrics are intriguing, though.
Bring up the guitars. Karthik 2.0 is performed and composed by the Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale, and the track seems authentic even though it doesn't go anywhere beyond some standard guitar-riffs. Still, as a theme tune, this is sexier than the last track, and has the potential to be interestingly moulded into a film.
Then come the obligatory remixes. The KCK remix, however, by Kale and the Punditz, is actually an improvement on the original track, a woofer-thumping retake. The Hey Ya and Uff Teri Ada remixes are standard issue stuff, pale and needless attempts to spice up tracks that already kinda work.
Despite a couple of tracks that should do well -- the first two, and the Punditz stuff perhaps -- the soundtrack doesn't deliver anything exceptional. Still, it's perfectly pleasant -- and that is likely all it ever tried to be. Easy listening, remember?

Review: Veer is a disaster, period
The son of a legendary hero grows up and attempts to follow in his father's footsteps, however bloodthirsty this road may be. It is standard Bollywood cliche, but Salim Khan, one of our most iconic screenwriters, deserves a better tribute than son Salman, credited for the film's story, churning out this unbelievably hackneyed period disaster.
Director Anil Sharma has never been known for his subtlety, and here, sinking his teeth into the painfully melodramatic script, he goes at it hammer and tongs, taking one megabudget misstep after another.
Set ambiguously in the nineteenth century, this is the story of a warrior clan, the Pindharis, a mercenary lot who become sworn enemies with the King of Madhavgarh, Rajasthan [ Images ] after the latter betrays them, joining hands with the British for a full-blooded Pindhari slaughter.
All this happens in the first few minutes of Veer, Mithun's Pindhari sergeant hacking off the King's (Jackie Shroff [ Images ]) hand right in the prologue, so even as you realise this is going to be a noisy, hoofbeat filled monstrosity, at least there can be wall to wall action? No such luck.
'Sholay, Deewar inspired 3 Idiots'
Most of you who have seen 3 Idiots will agree that the film's hillarious dialogues and scenes are just one of the reasons the movie is such a hit.
And while Raj Kumar Hirani deserves praise for penning some of the lines, there's another man who belongs right up there with the director. That man is Abhijat Joshi, a professor of English at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, who co-wrote 3 Idiots with Hirani. Joshi has earlier worked with Hirani in another of the director's blockbuster, Lage Raho Munnabhai.
Joshi tells Patcy N all about working in the two blockbusters and more.
How did you get associated with 3 Idiots and Lage Raho Munnabhai?
I studied in the Gujarati medium, which is one reason why I was able to write Lage Raho Munnabhai as I had access to Gandhi's words in his own language. I studied Science to become an engineer but later changed to Arts because I thought I would make a bad engineer. So I studied English Literature and started teaching in Ahmedabad after my graduation. I wrote a play, Shaft of Sunlight for which I won the BBC World play contest in England. Vinod [Vidhu Chopra, producer of 3 Idiots, Lage Raho Munnabhai] happened to see the play and that's how we started working together.
He saw the play and sought you out?
He was in England for the Birmingham Film Festival where his films were being showcased. He saw my play and loved it. He left his visiting card for me at the theatre. I was in Paris at that time. Anyway, I got the visiting card and contacted him when I reached Mumbai. The very first thing that he asked me as soon as I called him was, 'you are a damn good playwright. When will your writing get corrupted?' I replied, 'never'. He then said, 'The day you get corrupted you will be thrown out'. He then offered me a job and I started writing with him. But my film with him, Kareeb was a huge disaster. Vinod almost lost his house because of that.
Why do you think Kareeb failed? Did its failure help you in future?
I now know why Kareeb did not work. It was because in the second half, my hero was passive and static. This mistake helped me when we were writing Lage Raho Munnabhai. In the early draft of Lage Raho Munnabhai, we had written about a hunger strike. But the story failed to take off from there. I remembered the mistake with Kareeb so instead of making Munna go on a hunger strike, we decided to let him go the radio instead. That's how the whole radio thing came about. Imagine if we had gone with the early draft?
Why the shift to the US?
After Kareeb failed, I realised that I needed to learn a lot about screen writing. I was just 23 when I wrote my first screenplay. I was very raw. I needed more exposure so I joined Michener Center for Writers in the US and lived there for three years. I started teaching there to learn about their culture. Now I live six months here [Mumbai] and six months there. When I did not have a job in the US, Vinod sponsored me for one whole year. He told me that he would support me till I got a job.
You're based in the US. How do you and Hirani work together?
I come every six months to India while Raju comes twice or thrice to the US. So we stay connected for 8 to 9 months. Emails and telephone take care of the rest.

Vipul Shah's public embarrassment
Bollywood Trade News Network
Filmmaker Vipul Shah would never forget this insult easily. It was a night to announce his association with the prestigious Femina Miss India Pageant. The audience had just settled down and the journos were getting ready to take down the notes, when suddenly something unexpected happened.
The compere of the event committed a major sin. The sin of rubbing acclaimed filmmaker Vipul Shah on the wrong side. Vipul Shah, who has given bollywood some of the biggest hits like NAMASTEY LONDON and SINGH IS KINNG, had to face public embarrassment when his introduction went completely wrong. He was associated with producing TV shows instead of films, something the filmmaker really found hard to come to terms with.
Finally, when his turn for speech came, Vipul Shah pointed out to the error made by the compere. Though he was gracious enough to spare her of any acid comments, but he added, "My introduction is completely wrong. I am not that Vipul Shah, I think there has been some mistake in the research."
Despite this major hiccup, the evening proceeded smoothly with Vipul Shah teaming up with the pageant to select the next female lead for his film.
Aamir's next three, first at International festivals!
Abid, Bollywood Trade News Network
Always known to promote his films in the most ingenious way, Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan has now decided to showcase his three upcoming productions- PEEPLI LIVE, DHOBHI GHAAT and DELHI BELLY at various International festivals.
Produced under his very own banner, Aamir Khan Productions (AKP), the three films are much anticipated and expectations are quite high from the three projects. The first one that should release is PEEPLI LIVE directed by Anusha Rizvi and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao and also co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala. The promos are already there on various entertainment channels and it is a satire on the present system. With excellent actors like Raghuvir Yadav and Naseeruddin Shah as lead actors one can expect some intellectually gratifying stuff from PEEPLI LIVE. News is that it has been selected to compete at Sundance Film Festival 2010.
The next project, DHOBHI GHAAT, starring the promising star and son of late legendary actress Smita Patil and Raj Babbar, Pratik, also has Aamir in a special appearance and the film has been directed by Aamir's wife Kiran Rao. And last but not the least is DELHI BELLY, starring Aamir's nephew and star sensation of JAANE TU...YA JAANE NA, Imran Khan is complete and is also an eagerly awaited film directed by Abhinav Deo. Both the mentioned films too will premier at International film festivals and then release in theatres, later during the second half of this year.
Must add that Aamir sure knows the art of film promotion and the right way to handle different projects.
Kareena fee touches Rs 7 crore
She is undoubtedly the reigning female star of the bollywood circuit presently. And being such a huge star is not without bagging some big moolah too. Buzz, is that Kareena Kapoor has updated her fee and presently she commands a market price of Rs 7 crore per film. This amount even surpasses the fee that is paid to some leading male actors.
Reports are that Kareena will be paid Rs 7 crore for her upcoming film GOLMAAL 3 which stars Ajay Devgan, Sharman Joshi, Arshad Warsi and Tusshar Kapoor. Kareena would be the only female lead of the film as she does not want to work in multiple heroine projects.
With Kareena's fee going up when most of the actors are ready to take a cut on their remuneration, it only shows that Bebo's stature among the bollywood actresses is a mix of envy and pride.
Anees Bazmee upset with Katrina Kaif
Director Anees Bazmee who has worked with Katrina Kaif in films like WELCOME and SINGH IS KINNG has been let down by Kats this time around.
According to latest reports, Anees Bazmee wanted Katrina to work in his upcoming film THANK YOU, but the actress blocked the dates for Farah Khan's film TEES MAAR KHAN opposite Akshay Kumar instead.
This breach of trust has not only left Anees Bazmee a bitter man but also in a lurch. Reportedly, the filmmaker has not taken Katrina's neglect in any good humor and he seems to be in no mood to reconcile to this fact either.
Romantic Amnesia For Shahid
Poor, dear Shahid Kapoor. Firstly, former flame Kareena Kapoor didn't so much as spare him a glance, when they almost came face to face. Insiders claim that the two exes were rehearsing for an event within the same premises, and when Bebo stepped out, she spotted Shahid from a distance. Ms. Kapoor swiftly looked away and walked past Mr. Kapoor giving him the cold shoulder treatment (pure vegetarian Shahid!).
After KK, Vidya Balan, an earlier love interest of Kapoor too, gifted him a similar treatment. Apparently, the two were Mumbai bound on the same flight from New Delhi. But when they spotted one another Balan looked right through him. And this time Kapoor too pretended as if she didn't exist there. Pity, their 'Kismat' didn't forge a long 'Konnection.'

Salman and Mithun take 'Dance India Dance' by storm
Bollywood Trade News Network
The latest buzz on Zee TV's reality show 'Dance India Dance' is superstar Salman Khan's visit on the sets to promote his film VEER.
A source on the sets said that the 3 mentors - Remo D'souza, Terence Lewis and Geeta Kapur -had left no stone unturned to ensure that their favorite superstar was left completely speechless on watching the spectacular acts they had choreographed to songs from his films!
Known for his trademark mischievous sense of humor, Salman had the audience in splits with his wisecracks throughout!
"It's on purpose that Remo doesn't choreograph such steps for us...because he knows pretty well neither me nor the heroines would ever pull off such dance forms," said the awestruck actor after the very first performance.
He naughtily told his fans how Grand Master Mithun Da (who plays his father in VEER) once pointed out to a crew member of the film with a balding pate, grey hair and a haggard, wrinkled face, saying "Salman, that's my batch-mate!".
He went on to compliment Dada about how well he has maintained himself over the years, managing to look only 27 even today!
Continuing with his antics, Sallu cried hoarse to Mithun and said: "Dada, the press guys are hell-bent on making me accept that Zarine (the lead of VEER) looks like Katrina... and I'm tired of telling them she is not even close to her."
"Nobody knows Katrina better than me and I'm telling you guys, Zarine does not look like Katrina..." clarifies Sallu about his lady love Katrina. He did sound like a doting boyfriend although speculations are rife about their break - up.
Sallu...we buy your point...!
Just after his 'Kat' call, as if he wasn't done with spilling the beans on Dada, Salman carried on to tell the audience how Mithun Da, being an excellent cook, used to make food for the entire unit of VEER every night and workout in the kitchen with dumb-bells at the same time!
The Chef with dumb-bells, eh?
Watching the enthralling performances put together by the contestants of Dance India Dance, Salman decided to shake a leg too. So he got up, went on stage and jived to 'Love Me, Love Me, Love Me' alongside thrilled contestants Vandana and Kruti.
Seeing Salman move so well, Master Terence Lewis was keen to see him perform an aerial act with cables like so many of Dance India Dance contestants do.
Salman was hesitant at first but gave in when Terence said, "Salman, you are very strong. I'm sure you can do it!"
Watching Salman in mid-air, performing as he hung on to cables was a delight!
When some of the acts featured the boys lifting the girls high up in the air, Salman confessed, "Guys, now this is something I just cannot do! I may lift really heavy weights, bench press more than most men do but I can never lift a woman that high up in the air."

'We get poetic justice in our films'
Amitabh Bachchan seems all set to enthrall audiences with his quirky hand-picked roles. We saw a hint of his brilliance in last year's Paa. This year, we might see it in two films -- Ram Gopal Varma's Rann and Leena Yadav's Teen Patti.
The actor tells us what to expect.
Your blog has shown your displeasure with the media quite a few times, and now you're doing a film, Rann, which takes on the media. Don't you think you make use of the same media to promote your films?
I have always maintained that if any news is wrong, then it is. It has never been an effort to show the media in a bad light. Nor am I trying to teach them their responsibilities.
I believe that we get poetic justice in three hours in our Hindi films. In the movies, we make sure we show both the sides and let people decide what they want to take from it.
There is a dialogue in Rann: 'The media is only a business and not the conscience of the society.' Do you believe in this?
Media is the conscience of the society. It is a mirror of the people. It takes a lot of courage to bring out the truth. But does the media compromise on its business? That is what we need to know. And that is what we have shown in this film.
The characters in Rann are fictional. How people react in a given situation is what you will see in the film.

Flying Pals For Asin
She has dreams (London, or otherwise) of making it bigger in cinebiz. Asin, the Southern import who sparkled to success with 'Ghajini', recently bought herself a sprawling apartment at Lokhandwala, in the swanky suburbs of Mumbai. Her friendship with Sridevi and her two daughters has been well documented in tabloids. If she does get too pally with Boney too, well, it will simply be a Boney of contention between Sridevi and her.
But apart from human beings, Asin has taken to being friendly with a posse of parrots who have built their nest outside her window. Apparently, she feeds them guavas herself and those flying delights love pecking at their food from her manicured hands. Happy parrots. And rivals remaining green with envy over Asin.
Bhansali Gets It Rai …ght !
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has a new creative honcho in his 'Guzaarish' team. It's an uncredited honour, though. The passionate filmmaker has found a friend, philosopher and guide in his old pal Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Known to be insanely possessive about his projects, SLB is famed for taking all the creative decisions himself. Not any longer. An insider on his set whispers, "Sanjay consults Aishwarya on everything connected with 'Guzaarish'. Her words really matter to him and he asks her to be present on the sets even when she is not required for a scene."
Apart from her stunning physicality and talent, what has earned respect for Ash in the eyes of Bhansali is her unstinting professionalism. After co star's Hrithik's recent b'day bash, when everyone partied till the wee hours of the morning, it was only Ash who reported on time for next day's shooting.Point noted. Ash Bhansali likes it!
Shahid Kapoor on award winning spree

Though his latest release 'Chance Pe Dance' hasn't been able to pull in a lot of audiences, Shahid is looking forward to good times this year. He will be seen in Parmeet Sethi's untitled movie for Yash Raj Films apart from his father, veteran actor Pankaj Kapoor's 'Masoom'.

Salman returns to period drama with 'Veer'
After playing a prince early in his career in portions of 1992 film 'Suryavanshi', macho star Salman Khan is returning to period drama in his latest venture 'Veer' that releases Friday.
Interestingly, the epic has been written by Salman 20 years ago and is an Eros International Media Ltd presentation and Vijay Galani Moviez production.
"I had written the story 20 years ago, but at that time it wasn't possible to make the film. I thought now is the right time to make it, so I did... I showed the story to my father (noted writer Salim Khan) and the biggest fear was what is he going to say. But he said it's a good story," Salman had told us.
Made at a budget of around Rs.44 crore, (Rs.440 million) 'Veer' has been directed by Anil Sharma and marks the big screen debut of Zarine Khan, who is said to have a close resemblance to Salman's actress girlfriend Katrina Kaif.
"It's a love story set in the backdrop of a war for independence. I play a Rajasthani princess," said Zarine.
Shot extensively in Rajasthan, it is a story of bravery, treachery and love.
Set in colonial India, the film encapsulates a period when the British enslaved India with their divide and rule policy and kings and nawabs fell for it, except for the Pindaris who preferred death to dishonour and fought till their last breath. Salman plays one of the bravest and strongest Pindari soldiers named Veer.
As Veer takes on the might of the British Empire, he also has to fight the conniving King of Madavgarh as well as his own jealous tribesmen. The stakes are high as he has to avenge his father's dishonour as well as get over the hurdles in love as he romances princess Yashodhara, the daughter of his sworn enemy.
Also shot in Britain, it is also the first Bollywood film to be shot in the premises of Buckingham Palace.
Despite having the facility of special effects, the film also boasts of using thousands of real horses and other animals for authenticity.
What is to be seen is whether 'Veer' relives Salman's last year's magic at the box office thanks to massive hit 'Wanted', which marked his return to action.

Readers' Choice: Best Actors, 2009
It's the time of year for award shows, and while we watch a few and complain about some others, we at Rediff decided to give you the power to choose the best of the year.
We asked you to pick the year's best actors, and you've come up with an interesting, unpredictable list. Nicely done, and you've picked five performances that have been quite iconic this year. Here's a look.
5. Ranbir Kapoor in Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year
The young Kapoor has been impressing us with his star power and screen charisma. But Shimit Amin's film saw him trade all the trendy packaging and stylish tee-shirts to play a simple everyman, an ambitious Sikh with a conscience. It's a passively powerful acting job, impressive simply because he makes it look easy.

'Avatar' passes $500 million at U.S. box office
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Newly crowned Golden Globe winner "Avatar" broke the $500 million mark in record time at the North American box office on Monday, quickly closing in on the all-time record held by "Titanic" for 12 years.
Distributor 20th Century Fox said James Cameron's sci-fi spectacular earned an estimated $54.6 million during the four-day U.S. Martin Luther King holiday, leading the box office for a fifth consecutive weekend.
Its total rose to $505.1 million after 32 days. The Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" held the $500 million speed record, taking 45 days in 2008.
The News Corp -owned studio expects "Avatar" to surpass the $533 million haul of "The Dark Knight" next weekend, leaving only Cameron's "Titanic" ahead of it with $601 million. Data are not adjusted for inflation, and "Avatar" additionally benefits from premium pricing for 3-D screenings.
The international total for "Avatar" rose to $1.12 billion after a $129 million weekend. The worldwide total stands at $1.613 billion, trailing "Titanic" by just $230 million.
"Avatar" won Golden Globes on Sunday for best drama and director. All eyes are now on the Feb. 2 announcement of the Academy Award nominations.
"BOOK OF ELI" OPENS AT NO. 2
Denzel Washington's "The Book of Eli" opened at No. 2 in North America with $38.0 million for the four-day period, the actor's second-best opening after the three-day $43 million launch of 2007's "American Gangster." Young men accounted for about two-thirds of the audience for the Christian-themed apocalyptic thriller, said distributor Warner Bros. Pictures.
The $80 million film was produced by FedEx Corp Chairman Fred Smith's Alcon Prods., and distributed for a fee by Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc.
Director Peter Jackson's adaptation of "The Lovely Bones" took the No. 3 spot with $20.5 million in its first weekend of national release, as the "Twilight" crowd flocked to the supernatural murder story.

Bollywood's heroines get hotter!
The focus of this picture is Aishwarya's face. Aishwarya is known for her soft, bright and happy pictures. So we wanted to try something different for her. We thought of a grungy, dark look with attitude.
You cannot go wrong with Aishwarya when you're shooting her. She knows her angles. She gets involved in whatever she does and gives inputs. She is very impromptu and natural.
This picture took three hours to shoot.
The Best Dancers in the Movies
For art's sake or fun, dance is easily one of the most vibrant languages of expression. Needless to say, it has greatly influenced Hindi cinema and its undying obsession with musicals and celebratory sequences. And so, even today, the aptitude to romp poses as one of the foremost requirement among an actor's credentials.
Considering the medium's impact on our movies, it's not surprising to notice some of our top stars with extraordinary dancing prowess have essayed a professional performer on celluloid as well.
While in the past the likes of Waheeda Rehman, Madhubala and Vyjyanthimala foot it to perfection in Guide, Mughal-E-Azam and Amrapali respectively, others like Asha Parekh, Hema Malini, Sudha Chandran and Sridevi set the stage on fire with some hot-stepping action in Caravan, Abhinetri, Naache Mayuri and Chaalbaaz.
The men aren't far behind either. If Mithun Chakravarthy demonstrated some inspiring footwork in Disco Dancer and Dance Dance, Govinda channeled the Michael Jackson within with his free-styled moves in Street Dancer.
On that note, here's a look at Bollywood actors playing reel-time dancers in recent times.
Shahid Kapoor, Chance Pe Dance
After working with director Ken Ghosh on Ishq Vishk and Fida, Shahid collaborates again to work on Chance Pe Dance, a young musical featuring him as an aspiring actor struggling to make it big in Bollywood.
Meanwhile in order to make some living, he starts giving dance lessons to a bunch of difficult kids.
Now that mustn't have been too difficult for the Kaminey star. It might be recalled how he used to do something along the same lines in Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts.

How 3 Idiots changed Madhavan's life
R Madhavan cannot stop smiling after scoring a huge hit in 3 Idiots, co-starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Sharman Joshi.
The actor's performance has been much appreciated, and Bollywood seems to have opened its doors even wider to him.
He tells Syed Firdaus Ashraf how his life has changed after the film's release.
How is life after the success of 3 Idiots?
I think we moved from happiness to supreme happiness to ecstasy. Now, we're numb. I don't know how to react any more because the film has broken Sholay's record. It has touched people the way we expected it to. I have seldom met someone, who has not seen the film more than once. So obviously, the film has stuck a chord somewhere. I think (director) Raju Hirani is the true superstar of the film.
But how has your life changed after its release?
Let us put this way: I cannot eat paani puri on the road. But I'm not complaining.
People have come and told me that they could open up and speak to their fathers in real life just like my character, Farhan Qureshi did in 3 Idiots.
