The best and the worst so far: Bollywood 2008By Ivan DeSouza, Staff Writer

Like each year, stars kept doing what they do best – making news for all the right and wrong reasons (more likely the latter). XPRESS zeroes in on the good, the bad and the ugly from Bollywood.

The best of Bollywood

Taare Zameen Par

India’s entry to the Oscars, this tale of a dyslexic child was one of the most heart-warming movies of the year. Darsheel Safary and Aamir Khan worked up celluloid magic here. Eight-pack abs Aamir also looks set to deliver another knockout punch before the year comes to a close with Ghajini.

A Wednesday

Just goes to show how a taut script and superb acting can make a winner. Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher excelled. Other such low-budget but extremely gripping movies included Aamir, Mithiya, Shaurya, Dasvidaniya and Khuda Ke Liye (Pakistan).

Priyanka Chopra

Just when everyone had written her off, she made a sultry fashion statement with Fashion. She also contributed to global warming when she slipped into that golden bikini for Dostana. Chopra rules, right guys?

Rock on!

Farhan Akhtar and Arjun Rampal, Luke Kenny and Purab Kohli rocked big time in one of the most original movies. The movie appealed to those born in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and even the ’90s.

Imran Khan

When Imran Khan wooed Genelia D’Souza with that disarming smile and that boy-next-door look in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, millions of female hearts fluttered coyly. He may have landed a dud with his second movie Kidnap, but there’s no denying that this boy looks all set to dominate Bollywood in the years to come.

Queen of tacky: Rakhi Sawant

Ah, how can one forget Bollywood’s original item girl? As loud, crude and vulgar as ever, she handed out this gem: "If I am hot, is it my fault?" when she was warned by police for her skimpy clothes at a stage show. She was all over the place – be it the Mika kiss saga, bathing in front of a Buddha statue for an advert, or her antics on Big Brother, Madam Rakhi sure lived up to form.

...AND THE WORST

Amitabh Bachchan

When the entire world was out there with the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks, he slept with a gun under his pillow in a ‘symbolic act’. How ridiculous can one get? And what about ‘King’ Khan, Akshay, Salman, Saif, Hrithik... Were they so scared out of their wits that they too lost their voice? Bollywood lost big time here…

Shah Rukh vs Salman

When Salman told Shah Rukh that his TV show Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Hai? was a flop, compared to his Dus Ka Dum, it started the mother of all feuds. Given their behaviour, one feels like asking both: Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Hai? (Have you Passed the Fifth Grade?).

Ram Gopal Verma

After making one of the worst movies, Aag, in 2007, Verma did better in 2008, single-handedly bringing down Maharashtra chief Vilasrao Deshmukh in a moment of gimmickry, after the Mumbai terror attacks. Thankfully, he clarified he would not make a movie out of it.

‘Desh’aster

We must thank Kamaal Rashid Khan (or KRK) for amusing us. Though never intended as a comedy, our Dubai-based superman’s movie Deshdrohi had us laughing our guts out – when not tearing our hair out – in sheer disbelief
