The Week That Was at the Box Office

This week turned out to be good week at the box office for all the films that released on Friday. Even though the returns from the box office were not fantastic, but they still would have brought in some kind of relief.

The star of the week, if one can call it that, was Sangeeth Sivan's Ek The Power Of One, which starred Bobby Deol and Nana Patekar. The film has a pretty decent opening, with collections ranging between 30 to 40 per cent at single theatres and between 20 and 30 at the multiplexes. Aa Dekhen Zara, directed by Jehangir Surti opened with collections ranging between 30 to 35 per cent at most mulitolexes, with collections dipping slightly at the single screens. However Deepa Mehta's Videsh Heaven On Earth could not garner those kind of collections. This film had a very dismal opening and even the presence of Preity Zinta could not salvage the movie. Of the releases last week, neither of the five films, Aloo Chaat, Barah Aana, Firaaq, Straight and Lottery, could create any stir at the box office. From the week before that, Sooni Taraporewala's Little Zizou still continues to get in crowds at multiplexes in the city. This is its third week and this feel good movie's strategic release in select theatres seems to be working to its benefit. This Friday, Nagesh Kuknoor's Tasveer 8x10 is all set to release. This Akshay Kumar starrer is the only release set for this week after which the ban on the releases at multiplexes comes into effect, unless of course, there is a breakthrough in the ongoing fracas.
