Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt [Images] arrived in Lucknow on Saturday to a hero's welcome by thousands, who hailed him as the Samajwadi Party nominee for the prestigious Lucknow Lok Sabha seat.
Overwhelming crowds, largely comprising SP activists and supporters, thronged at the Lucknow airport where he landed about 1 pm. With his wife Manyata in tow and accompanied by SP general secretary Amar Singh [Images] and actress Jaya Bachchan , Dutt's motorcade meandered through the crowded main thoroughfare where passers by too joined in to cheer him.
He made his first halt at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi [Images] at Hazratganj , from where he was driven down to SP state headquarters on Vikramaditya Marg where he will address mediapersons at 5 pm.
Dutt, who has earned laurels for reviving the memory of father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi through his widely acclaimed 'Gandhigiri' portrayed in his antics as Munna Bhai, was literally overwhelmed by the ecstatic crowds .
"I am actually overwhelmed by the people's response to my decision to take my first step into politics from here", the charismatic actor told reporters.
Asked if his popular reel antics would be visible in real here, pat came the reply, "Yes of course, we will have both 'Gandhigiri' as well as 'Jaadu ki Jhappi' now that I am here."
In the absence of BJP stalwart former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee who has been representing the constituency for five successive terms is not likely to be in the fray this time, Dutt was likely to face the main contest from ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Akhilesh Das , who switched loyalties from the Congress not very long ago.
